With hundreds of ethnic groups and diverse regional traditions, Indonesia is celebrated for its colorful festivals, traditional arts, distinctive cuisine, beautiful handicrafts, and warm hospitality.

Culture & Etiquette

Indonesia is culturally diverse, and customs can vary significantly between islands and communities.

  • Dress respectfully when visiting temples, mosques, villages, and religious sites.

  • Remove your shoes when required before entering certain homes or religious places.

  • Respect religious ceremonies and avoid interrupting rituals or restricted areas.

  • Ask permission before photographing people, particularly during ceremonies.

  • Use your right hand when giving, receiving, or eating when appropriate.

  • Be mindful of sacred offerings, particularly in Bali, where small offerings may be placed outside homes, shops, and temples.

๐Ÿ›‚ Passport Requirements

Travelers entering Indonesia should have a passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of arrival.

Travelers should also have a return or onward ticket when required. Indonesian Immigration specifically lists a passport with at least six months' remaining validity and a return/onward ticket as requirements for the visa-exemption arrangement.

For Philippine Passport Holders

Philippine passport holders are currently eligible for Indonesia's Visa-Free Visit facility for tourism for up to 30 days.

The visa-free stay:

  • Allows up to 30 days

  • Is single entry

  • Has no visa fee

  • Cannot be extended

  • Requires a passport valid for at least 6 months

  • Requires a return or onward ticket

The Philippines is specifically included in Indonesia's current visa-free list.

๐Ÿ›ƒ Visa on Arrival

๐ŸŒ Other Nationalities

Visa requirements vary according to nationality, passport type, purpose of travel, and length of stay.

Travel Reminder: Entry and visa regulations can change. Travelers should verify the latest requirements with Indonesian Immigration before departure.

  • Book popular attractions and tours ahead, particularly during peak travel periods.

  • Bring lightweight clothing for tropical destinations and a light jacket for mountain areas.

  • Pack comfortable walking shoes for sightseeing and outdoor activities.

  • Respect wildlife and marine environments by avoiding contact with coral and wild animals.

  • Follow safety instructions around volcanoes, beaches, diving sites, and national parks.

  • Respect local customs, particularly at religious and cultural sites.
